WEAVING THE COUNTRY TOGETHER: IDENTITIES AND TRADITIONS IN EAST TIMOR
Natali Pride BA(Hons) UNSW 2002
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank the people who have seen me through my honours year, my supervisors. Jean Taylor, for her insight, advice, and original ideas; David Reeve, for his good humour and for being there at the start; and Robyn Fallick, for her thorough editing and constant prodding.
This thesis led me to East Timor, a trip which opened my eyes to the living reality of my research. I would like to thank Melanie Stevens, for taking me under her wing; Sancho Goncalves, for driving me around Dili on his motorbike in search of that elusive interview; the staff at Yayasan Murak Rai, for organising a field trip to Los Palos; and the de Oliveira family in Dili, for their warmth and kindness. I would also like to thank Adelen Matthewman for introducing me to the de Oliveiras.
In Darwin, my thanks go to James Bennett, for his time, wonderful ideas, and unlimited use of the photocopier; and to Kevin Sherlock, who has the most impressive collection of documents a historian could hope for.
Thank you to Ed Aspinall, for first raising the idea of doing an honours year, and to the staff of UNSW library for their assistance in organising inter-library loans. Thanks also to Riyong Kim, for providing enough stress for the two of us, and making me feel calm as a result.
My eternal gratitude to my parents, Sheridan, Ross and Gemma, for seeing me through the seemingly never-ending computer, intellectual and emotional dramas of the past twelve months. Thanks also to Matt, for his generosity and unflinching honesty. My appreciation to my friends at Mosman State Emergency Services, who provided me with the opportunity to forget about my thesis every Tuesday night, and to Adrian Muir, for encouraging a love of history past high school..
For technical support, I am eternally grateful to Anthony Willis, for literally building me a computer that works. Thanks to Andrew Payne at Photographix Studio in Balmain, Veronica Gillmer at Alphabet Soup, and Terry Triggs at Piccadilly Print, all of whom generously gave their time, resources and ideas. My appreciation also to Steuart McIntyre for scanning my photos.
Finally, I would like to dedicate this work to my grandparents: to Jerry, for her unsurpassed support over the past twelve months, and for teaching me grace under pressure; to Bob, for his constant supply of women’s magazines, which didn’t quite manage to take my mind off this thesis; and to Dos and George, who are not here to read it.
